The gentleman walked into our London office with three large folders tucked under his arm.
Inside the folders was probably the world’s finest collection of historical material.
There were only 57 items in total. It’s a triumph of quality over quantity.
He took three hours to take us through all the items...it was fascinating to hear him describe them.
In fact a crowd of Stanley Gibbons staff gathered to hear him talk...
The famous ‘Lost Prince’: a picture postcard of all five of King George V’s children including Prince John; the ‘Lost Prince’.
Prince John has actually signed ‘Johnnie’ but a Royal aide is believed to have deleted the last three letters as this way of signing did not befit a Royal family member.
King Edward VII signed photo: c1859 King Edward has signed whilst in Rome, this is believed to be the earliest known signed photo of a member of the Royal family.
A letter from Princess Louise: The Granddaughter of Queen Victoria writing about the last few hours of Victoria’s life.
Mary Queen of Scots, Edward IV, Princess Diana, Edward & Mrs Simpson, George VI...
The list goes on...
It is a truly staggering collection, one man’s dedication to all things Royal & Historical.
My personal favourite is a letter from King George III (1787) to Prime Minister Pitt talking about the gambling debts of his son, The Prince Regent, later King George IV.

Admiral Nelson: A ‘Top Secret’ Order to meet at ‘Secret rendezvous no 101’ signed whilst at sea on the Victory – 25th February 1804.

And then there is Mussolini, Hitler, Samuel Pepys, David Livingstone, Montgomery of Alamein, Oscar Wilde, Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle...
Talking to the owner of this magnificent collection was possibly the most interesting 3 hours of my career. He took us through each item one by one...
His enthusiasm was contagious...
The touch, the smell of the documents was captivating.
We then agreed a price and became the proud owners of what we consider to be the world’s finest collection of historical documents.
Soon we will have them available for sale.
And then you too can be captivated by the history on offer.
