Now she's one of the world's rarest stamps...
I've been working here for almost 12 years.
And it's the first time I have handled an example of this stamp...
That's because only 3 are known to exist.
She's called
The Mauretania...
She was to be not only the fastest, but also the most luxurious ship ever built.
She was launched in 1906...the fastest ship of her generation.
In 1907 she was awarded the Blue Riband for the fastest eastbound crossing of the Atlantic...
In 1909 she averaged 23.69 knots to be awarded the fastest westbound crossing. This record stood for over 20 years. No ship has held it longer.
In 1914 she was requested by the British Government to become an armed merchant cruiser during the 1 st World War.
She then became a troop ship at Gallipoli.
And she helped more than just the British...
She carried Canadian troops from Halifax to Liverpool...and she carried thousands of American troops until the end of the war.
Her reward would come some 50 years later...

In 1969 The Royal Mail issued a series of stamps with a ship theme. The Mauretania featured on the highest value, the 1 shilling. Quite an honour...
I'll be honest with you here...This stamp now has a value of 40p...about 80 cents.
It's common as stamps go, printed in the millions.
However...
One sheet of stamps was subject to a printing error.
The result being that just 3 of these stamps are known with the red colour omitted.
...that makes it a very desirable to a stamp collector.
