The Chief Executive's exclusive £100,000 investment portfolio

The investment that grows... even when the stock market is crashing

Dear Reader,

My name is Mike Hall and I am the Chief Executive of Stanley Gibbons.

We always give our clients a good deal...

I know that what we sell is of top quality and offers sound investment potential. That's a given...

I have put my money where my mouth is... I have invested my own money in rare stamps and autographs.

On the way into the office today, I found myself thinking about taking more money out of the stock market and putting it into rare signatures.

Now I know that share prices just now are, in many cases, artificially depressed based on sentiment...

But the excessively morose behaviour of investors looks set to remain for some time to come. In the meantime, the valuation of the shares I own bears no relationship to the fundamental strengths, performance and prospects of the underlying companies invested in.

So, I thought perhaps rather than sit here and allow people I don't know to lose me more money whilst they bale out of good companies on a daily basis (ie. the "buy high sell low" brigade), maybe I should take some money out for a while.

There is no point playing a game when players are cheating (the market makers in this instance).

But I changed my mind...

When I looked at the screen this morning and thought of selling I just couldn't. I still believe the companies I picked to invest in are strong companies...

I don't own anything to do with financial services or property. I have very little exposure to retail. My investments are in growth markets and have good management teams.

I refuse to sell something at less than what I could get on a fire sale of the assets. Why would I sell an asset that generates earnings of 25% per annum and growing?

I decided to sit it out and wait. I do not believe the end of the world is nigh...

Provided the companies I hold continue to grow, one day buyers will come out of their bunkers and see that the world is still here and that everything is going cheap. Then, I'll hopefully start making money again.

As a value investor, these are frustrating times for me as share prices have very little to do with value just now.

Anyway, enough of my ranting on the general state of the stock market...

In my miserable state of mind, I uncharacteristically decided to do something charitable...

I had an idea to pick the portfolio of rare signatures I would have purchased anyway...

And then offer it to you instead...

Remember, I would buy these items if I had the money available right now.

Not only that, I decided to make a good offer a GREAT one by giving you a discount of 10%...

This is quite simply the ultimate offer I have ever made.

My £100,000 Investment Portfolio

Let me share with you the insider secrets...

This is what I think about when choosing the best investment in rare signatures:

Something special

I look for personalities I find interesting and then see whether we have anything that is just a bit special in stock...

What I want is the best examples I have seen for some time that I think deserve to attract a larger premium.

In other words, items that I think are worth more than our retail price.

Recognisable Names

I focus on the "big names"...

Personalities we always sell quickly where demand seems to be relentless.

Liquidity is an essential ingredient to a successful exit at the highest price.

Long term recognition and interest ensures long term price appreciation.

Historic returns

I look at historic prices against today's price to validate a sound investment return.

As I believe in the long term sustainability of the market, I expect such returns to continue in the future.

We all know the cliché - "Historic returns are no guarantee of future performance..."
Well, I know that, but historically bad returns are not a good investment quality so I will stick to items that have, in the long term, performed well as an investment in the past.

Visual appeal

Sometimes I pick an item as visually I think it is fantastic.

I want to hang this up at home and see it every day. Guests find our signature displays fascinating.

I'm passionate about these items and I hope they find a good home:
