The Chief Executive's Top Tips: Genius Investing

Recession worries?

Not here.

We are in a unique business. And occasionally we are able to offer unique items. Items that stagger even us. These items have always proven to be recession proof.

Today I have just the item for you...

It relates to the man placed Number One in Life Magazine's poll of the "100 most Important People in the last 100 years"

"Be courageous. I have seen many depressions in business. Always America has emerged from these stronger and more prosperous. Be brave as your fathers before you. Have faith! Go forward!" Thomas Edison

In times of economic uncertainty calm heads are required. We could all learn a lot from Thomas Edison.

For one; we all owe him a debt of thanks.

Thomas Edison was the world's greatest inventor. He holds a world record 1,093 US patents.

No mean feat for a deaf man who didn't talk until he was four years old.

Even more incredible when you consider Edison was thrown out of school after 3 months, his teachers describing him as 'addled'.

Edison put his success down to his mother's home teaching.

This is the man who went on to invent the first commercially practical light bulb, the phonograph, and the storage battery.

Taught at home by his Mum.

He founded what is now General Electric, a $347 billion company, one of the 5 largest companies in the USA.

All things related to Thomas Edison are exceptionally popular.

For example we have a beautiful signed photo available. It's new to our stock but will be sold within a week. That's how popular Edison is.

The Real Holy Grail

But the real Holy Grail for collectors is the "Patents".

Find an original Edison Patent and you'll be one of a handful of private owners around the world. It's a very exclusive club.

You can imagine most patents are held in priceless company archives or in museums around the world.

You don't get to see these things; they are too delicate to put on display, too important to handle...

The detail and technical analysis are amazing, the handwritten descriptions, and hand-drawn illustrations a joy to behold.

His work and 1,093 patents have allowed us to live the way we do. His influence on how we live today cannot be understated.

However we rarely get to see the thinking of those that have made our history.

But today we do...

You see...we have managed to obtain an original Thomas Edison patent.

It is signed by the great man and dated October 28, 1882, the same year Edison installed the first New York power station.

This document is in pristine condition despite its 126 year age.

1882; these were the times of Queen Victoria...of P.J. Barnum & Jesse James...

Tchaikovsky's '1812 overture' was debuting in Moscow...

Meanwhile Thomas Edison was busy at work.

The patent is 8 pages in total, including a hand-drawn, mechanical diagram. The patent text is 6 pages full of detailed scientific explanation as to how the invention works.

Edison has signed in a full, bold, signature "Thomas Alva Edison". The document has been countersigned by a notary public who confirms Edison has signed.

It's an overseas patent for India relating to dynamos for electrical lamps.

Quite stunning in its detail. It's the first Edison patent we have handled.

Edison is quite possibly the most influential man in history. His achievements have stood the test of time. To handle an original patent is an honour, to own one would be a delight.

After all, this is the man who shaped much of the creativity you see in America today. Edison founded the first ever research company. This is a piece of US National Heritage. There is a huge amount of pride in owning an item of this caliber.

Our own records suggest we may wait 30 years to see another.

That's why I recommend it as my first Top Tip of 2008.

Thomas Edison is the man who lit up the world. The condition of the item, the strength of the signature and the content are the most important factors when assessing long term investment potential.

This patent has them all in abundance.

It will be some time before we see another.

As Thomas Edison once said:

"Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work"

This is easy. You don't have to do any work. It's probably the easiest investment you will ever make. Just one phone call to my colleague below:
